Caring For Our Natural Resources
“We do not inherit the earth
from our ancestors,
we borrow it from our children.”
Kuoni is fully aware that it is dependent upon the rich natural resources and unique landscapes at the destinations and thus has the responsibility to minimize the negative impacts of our business on the environment, while at the same time enhancing its positive actions towards life in general. Kuoni focuses on concrete actions and pilot projects related to climate change, coral reef protection, water protection and biodiversity as well as facilitating the transfer of knowledge on environmental management to our hotel partners.
Tackling climate change
Kuoni recognises that climate change poses risks and opportunities to our company, to the tourism industry and holiday destinations, and to society as a whole. The United Nations World Tourism Organisation has characterised the tourism sector as being highly sensitive to the impacts of climate change (Davos Declaration, 2007). Therefore, as an integral part of Kuoni’s Corporate Responsibility strategy, the company has made a long-term commitment to taking action to mitigate and adapt to the phenomenon. This includes measuring and reducing the carbon footprint of our operations, building adaptive capacity in the destinations and encouraging our customers to reduce their climate impact by offsetting their flight emissions. Protecting coral reefs
Kuoni joined forces with one of the biggest international nature conservation organisations – the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) – in 2008 to support the protection of the fragile coral reefs in Egypt and the Maldives, both popular tourist attractions. Kuoni’s collaboration with the IUCN, local tour operators and the Hurghada Environmental Protection and Conservation Association (HEPCA) includes financing scientific research, identifying the reefs most at risk due to climatic change and protecting these in collaboration with the local authorities.
